Mill Springs Battlefield

Gray & Pape’s Preservation Plan for the Mill Springs Battlefield is recognized as a national model by Edwin C. Bears, Chief Historian at the National Park Service. The plan identified planning needs, presented a range of possible preservation and public interpretation scenarios, and outlined the steps necessary to implement the preservation options. It also takes into account many of the constraints unique to a community-based preservation effort, including the private ownership of property, limited funding, and limited resources for administrative staff. To date, the Mill Springs Battlefield Association has implemented the lion’s share of the original plan, and has successfully competed for a variety of federal and state grants using the plan as a guide.
